Last year when BCCI advertised for the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team, the procedure was going well before Anil Kumble applied for the post and somehow assured that he will be the next coach of the team.
This year, the same thing has happened and it’s Virender Sehwag who has applied for the post at the last moment and in all possibility, he will take over the charge from the current coach.
But there is an interesting story behind Sehwag applying for the post, as it has been learnt that it is none other than Indian skipper Virat Kohli who has asked his former state mate to apply for the job.
Reportedly, Sehwag was asked by BCCI to apply for the job but the aggressive batsman was reluctant to apply. Later, Kohli himself contacted Sehwag during the Indian Premier League and urged him to throw his hat in the ring.
At present, Sehwag is in England covering the Champions Trophy and keeping a close eye on Indian team, especially on coach Kumble and skipper Kohli.
Along with Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Tom Moody, Dodda Ganesh, Richard Pybus have also applied for the post. Though Kumble is an automatic entrant in the race though he might be reluctant to ask for an extension. Sehwag leads the race due to the fact that he is the biggest icon between all the applicants and as said Kohli himself asked him to apply for the job.
Sehwag worked with Kings XI Punjab in 2017 IPL season with a capacity of a mentor, Head of Cricket Operations and strategy for KXIP. In 2015, he switched to Haryana from Delhi as a professional player. Though he does not fulfil the criteria of working with an ICC team as Kumble also did not tick all the boxes last year.
BCCI is expected to announce the new Head Coach after the conclusion of Champions Trophy and the new coach is expected to fly to West Indies with the team for limited-over series, which includes five ODI’s and one T20I.
