England vs Australia 1st ODI Preview

After a grueling Ashes series which, quite unexpectedly, England won by 3-2. The Ashes series was, in fact, characterized by none of the team being in the great form and ultimately it was England who took advantage of the moments at the right time.

Both the sides played a T20 on Monday which, after a frenzied end, was won by England. Australia, however, will feel they let the game slip off as they were in position to finish the game with one over to spare. But the lack batting prowess stung the visitors, as it did in the Test series. After a brilliant 90 by the debut captain Steve Smith and a calm knock of 44 by Maxwell none of the lower order batsmen could play the innings to finish off the match. In fact they missed the services of James Faulkner, who has been phenomenal finisher for them in the past 18 months.

England was in a quandary at 18-2 as they lost both openers. But it was Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali at top of their game as not only did they steady England but increased the run rate. At one stage they were 152-2 off 16 overs but ended the innings at 182.

After an early exit in the world cup at the hands of Bangladesh, the hosts worked wonder in this format against the finalists of the world cup, New Zealand. This series would change the way English played their ODI cricket as they dumped their old ways of playing cautiously and took everyone by surprise with their aggressive stroke-play. They won the series 3-2.

While in the first match they made a humongous 408 runs in the second match they almost chased down a target of 398 runs. But they would chase 350 runs in a do or die match to level the series and went on to win the final ODI.

However, it will be interesting to see their approach against the World Champions Australia once the take the field on Thursday.

Australia on the other hand has been in a terrific form in the ODI format as they last lost a bilateral series in 2013 against India in India. In fact in the last ten bilateral series Australia has lost just once.

The last time these two played a bilateral ODI series was in Australia where Aussies won by a margin 4-1. But now Australia is missing on a few key players which were the part of team and were in good form while England has dropped players from their ODI side which seemed like a burden on the team.

It will be an interesting series for both the sides as one side is trying to build after the world cup triumph while the other one will be striving to continue their new found ODI method.

Australia is 1.65 to win the match and with the lack of batting depth, as was on display in the T20 match the odds are slightly skewed to begin. With the Australia’s ineptitude against the moving ball well engraved the price is not justified. However, still we will be backing Australia to win the first ODI.
