Match No 30: CSK v KKR
Date and Venue: 30th April 2015, Kolkata
Head to Head: Played 15 CSK 10 KKR 5
It is the rematch between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals and due to some absurd scheduling there is just a one day between the two games.
The first game between these two at Chennai was more of the battle of spin as the pitch was spinning and due to its slow nature made stroking the ball difficult. Some of the recent games are giving an indication that the pitches are slowing down and that time has come when spinners will come into it more.
Gautam Gambhir after winning the toss put Chennai in to bat and realizing the nature of the wicket batsmen went for it hard in the first six overs. However, once the slower bowlers and spinners came into the attack it made scoring more difficult. In the last 15 overs of the innings they scored 86 runs and posted a paltry 133 runs. None of the batsmen cared to stay on the wicket and apply themselves in. The form of their middle order is a cause of a little concern for then as twice now they have stuttered. Suresh Raina, who has been so consistent in the past, has played one innings of substance. MS Dhoni too has not been himself though he has promoted himself this season.
In the bowling department their forte, spin bowling, performed well second in a row. Defending a score of 134 their side was rattled by an early onslaught which brought down the equation to 83 off 90 balls by the time they came on. Be it any pitch defending less than six an over is always on any pitch. But they were so meticulous executing their plans that they strangled the batsmen for the next fifteen. Ashwin triggered the process by taking two wickets in the two overs he bowled giving away just five runs.
Kolkata Knight Riders too was the part of some horrible batting which was on display by both the teams. Having lost Gambhir in the first over, Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey controlled the innings by counter attacking and it looked like the match is done with less than run a ball required.
But the batsmen had other plans losing wickets regularly and then having a lull period in the middle overs which left too much for them in the end. Needing 17 from the last over, Ten doeschate tried but they fell short by 2 runs.
However their bowling was impressive, spinners did what CSK spinners did to their batsmen. The two spinners in the XI, Piyush Chawla and Sunil Narine, accounted for three wickets in the 8 overs these two bowled giving away just 44 runs. In the pacers department they replaced Morne Morkel with Pat Cummins which bode well for the team as he gave away just 25 runs in the four overs he bowled but without any wickets.
