RR and RCB Face Off in the Eliminator

Eliminator: RCB v RR

Date and Venue: 20th May 2015, Pune

Two teams who have had a different journey to the playoffs so far will play in the eliminator and the winning team will play the loser of Qualifier 1 for the place in the finals.

Royal Challengers Bangalore who lost three of the four games they played at the beginning of the tournament despite having a batting line up which included Gayle, Kohli, AB De Villiers and Dinesh Karthik. It seemed it will be another tournament where they perform below expectations.

However, as the matches went by, little tweaks in the batting order and the return of Mitchell Starc sparked their comeback in the tournament. Since his return he has played 11 matches and scalped 18 wickets at an average of 13.44. He has managed to pick up wickets both at the end and up front.

The big three of the batting line up, Gayle, Kohli and De Villiers, have contributed heavily in the batting line up and we could see their batting struggle if none of them gets the sunstantial score. This is where RCB’s apprehension lies as their middle order has hardly been tested and most of the time when they got the chance they have failed.

Mandeep Singh and Dinesh Karthik are a huge part of this middle order and though the former has looked in the fine touch latter has not been impressive this season. Sarfaraz Khan has played one innings where he was made hero and since then his cheekiness has not quite paid off.

In the lower order hitting RCB is depending on just David Wiesse to come good if none of their big three fires. He has played an innings of 47 off 25 balls against Mumbai Indians in a losing cause while chasing 200+.

Rajasthan Royals has somehow managed to make it to the playoffs after beginning their campaign fantastically. Winning their first five games they hit a bump as they needed to win their last match against KKR to make it to the playoffs.

In the crunch match against KKR they put a big score of 199 to defend on the back of a brilliant century by Shane Watson. In reply KKR were cruising towards the target and it was once again Shane Watson who picked up two wickets to complete his exceptional performance.

The batting has been on and off for them as youngsters like Deepak Hooda and Karun Nair performed in the initial matches but have gone cold since then. Steve Smith, who is an important player in the middle order, has not lived up to the expectations. Sanju Samson has showed promise but has been batting too low to make any difference.

Bowling has disappointed in last few matches and against the RCB batting line up they need to pull up their socks as anything loose will be plundered. They have changed their bowling combination for a few times now and should go in with the one they have been playing in last two games.
