IPL 2016- Players’ Draft

IPL 2016 got new teams with Pune making a re-entry into the IPL fray albeit with a different owner this time and Rajkot making its debut in the IPL. The players from the two partially-defunct teams, CSK and RR, will go into the draft of 50 players of which only 10 players will be picked in the draft tomorrow and the rest of the players will go into the auction pool to be held on 06th Feb 2016. To brief, tomorrow will be the day the core of the two teams will be built.

The teams were bid through reverse bidding process and Pune bid the lowest and by that virtue will be the first to bid for the players from the draft. The first capped player to be picked by both teams would bag a Rs. 12.5 crore deal. Subsequently, the remaining four capped players are set to get Rs 9.5 crore, Rs 7.5 crore, Rs 5.5 crore, and Rs 4 crore each. The uncapped players too would be available for a stipulated fee of Rs 4 crore.

In all possibilities MS Dhoni should be the captain of Pune as they have the luxury to go first in the bidding. Apart from Dhoni let us take a look at the other players from both the teams who may be picked in the draft.

Chennai Super Kings

Ravichandran Ashwin

R. Ashwin has been India’s undisputed best bowler in last 12 months and his effects have been zoomed further with the tests India played in the subcontinents. He was the highest wicket taker in the Test series against with 31 wickets. In the ODIs too he was the only Indian bowler which troubled the African batsmen. Let’s take a look at his IPL career:

Matches Wickets   Average Economy
97 90 24.23 6.45
Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja made his dream comeback into the test team against South Africa picking up 23 wickets and was the second highest wicket taker in the series. He scored some important runs lower down the order too. Being an all rounder he must be the second choice for the teams after Dhoni.

Batting Matches Runs Average Strike Rate
111 1383 23.44 123.59
Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina has been with CSK since its inception and they have retained him every time before the auctions. He is the highest run scorer in the IPL and the only Indian batsman to score a hundred in World cup T20.

Dwayne Bravo

This West Indian all rounder should be next choice for the teams despite McCullum being in the draft due to his availability during the time. Also his all round display will be handful for the teams in this format.

Batting Matches Runs Average Strike Rate
91 1163 24.74 126.82
Brendon McCullum

His attacking style of play gave CSK plethora of good starts and his 158 off 73 balls in the opening match of the IPL in 2008 is the innings none of us will ever forget.

Rajasthan Royals

Ajinkya Rahane

He has been India’s best in the home conditions as well as abroad. After leaving him out of the limited overs squad citing his inability to play swiftly he answered in the best possible way, scoring runs more than run a ball at number four. He has proved that he belongs to this format time and again for India and Rajasthan Royals.

Shane Watson

Though he was not in the best of forms this summer which subsequently led to his retirement from tests he will be a hot stock in the T20s due to his all round ability. He is with Rajasthan Royals since its inception and for the first time will represent a different team.

Steve Smith

Considered one of the best batsmen going around, Steve Smith was awarded with the Australian captaincy after the retirement of his predecessor Michael Clarke. Though he has not played any blazing innings till now but ignoring him will be hard for the teams. He made his IPL debut in 2012.

James Faulkner

This star all rounder from Down under has set ablaze many T20 leagues and won many matches for Australia coming down the order. He has the ability to win the match for his team with the bat from almost any situation. But he had a quiet IPL 2015.
