Clinical win for India – India V SriLanka 2014

India vs Sri Lanka, 1st ODI

India beat rusty Lankans

Yet again it was India who came on top in an India V Lanka game and with a clinical performance. India, in the 169 runs win, was adroit in each and every department. Batting by both the openers in their 231 runs stand was planned to perfection and gave the innings a much required thrust  after a cautious start. They managed to garner 96 runs from 8 overs and that too in the middle overs of the innings and after that it was just a catch-up game for the Lankans. The openers were brutal in their approach and managed to find boundaries even off decent deliveries. Suresh Raina, playing his 200th match, played aggressively and scored 52 off 34 balls while Axar Patel’s impetus at the end helped India to cross the 350 mark. Bowling, which was believed to be the Achilles’ heel for the Indian side, clicked and kept it tight up front with the swing and pace of Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron especially latter who bowled beautifully before going off the field due to injured leg. Aaron clocked a delivery at 152.1 kph which was a rare sight for an Indian pacer. Ishant Sharma, who is getting a revival in the odi side, ended with impressive figures of 4 for 34 in his 8 overs.

Sri Lanka, who managed a paltry 194 runs, were visibly rusty and out of practice as it was their first international match after Aug 14. There were no positives what so ever for The Lankans as they were routed in every department. Their bowling was mediocre and bowled length deliveries to the batsmen and were thrashed all around the park. There was a definite lack of plan while bowling and variations were not on offer by the pacers and spinners proved to be ineffective on a pitch which was surprisingly assisting pacers. Suraj Randiv who was playing for the international side after a hiatus of 3 years took 3 wickets but gave away 78 runs in 10 overs. Kumar Sangakara, who was sceptical about the schedule of this series, dropped two catches of both the openers. Sri Lanka managed to keep in check in the first 20overs giving away only 90 runs but then the flood gates opened and 105 runs came in the next 10overs which included batting powerplay overs from 24th to 28th over.

India will be happy with their performance as both openers managed a century each and the required impetus was provided by the middle order batsmen. Bowlers did their part as well but India will be concerned about the injury Varun Aaron persisted and Dhawal Kulkarni may get a game if Aaron is not fit to play the game. Sri Lanka have their task cut out and need to lift themselves up  so they can match India and give them a good fight.

There are still four matches to go in the series with next fixture on Nov 6 at Ahemedabad.
