Australia Team Preview for T20 World Cup 2016
If Pakistan is the perennial mercurial team then Australia is the perennial favourite for ICC tournaments, at least going by the odds. Australia has reached pinnacle in two of three formats but it is this format, T20 internationals, which is to be triumphed by the men from southern hemisphere.
The only time they were close to the only ICC title they have not won was in 2010 against England but failed to haul them. Even though they have got a squad which covers all the bases including the top order in form batsmen in David Warner, Aaron Finch, Usman Khwaja and Steve Smith they have struggled in the past and a home series 3-0 loss to India is a testament to that. Then comes the middle order hitters and they have Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and James Faulkner to finish the games. However, a rarity that is, they lack bowling prowess this time around with Mitchell Starc (out injured) and Mitchell Johnson (retired) missing in the XI. Apart from the fast bowling they lack in the spinners too with Adam Zampa, the leg spinner, the only one in the squad.
In a way, these Australian squad is analogous to the West Indies squad who are great performers in the T20 leagues around the world but somehow are unable to perform in the national team. On the flip side Australia will be confident coming after the T20 series win against South Africa (2-1) after being 0-1 down in the series and chasing 205 successfully to keep the series alive.
Australia will be confident of overhauling the group stage but the conditions in India and their ineptitude against spinners make them an expensive prospect for World T20. Our prediction is that they won’t be able to cross the group stage.
